A Cajun Christmas

The Christmas tree and our presents at Mom's townhouse on Christmas Day.

MONDAY - Christmas Day

Monday morning we all got out of bed understandably late. We eventually made our way to the living room to open presents. We each took turns handing out presents . Jackie and Steve got everybody TIVO®s, a neat device for recording TV so you can fast-forward through all of the commercials. Jackie got a Steve a really nice leather overcoat . Steve got Jackie some beautiful, and probably very expensive, jewelry . Everybody also loaded up on DVDs and books to read. These other gifts were not interesting to observe, hence I did not bother taking any pictures of them. After unwrapping our gifts, we stuffed the used wrapping into garbage bags. This subject is also too boring for pictures. Then we sat down for lunch. Mom cooked a well-seasoned (just right!) turkey, along with all of the usual Christmas side dishes. For dessert, Mom served up her lemon cake and another unimportant cake. It was delicious.

After lunch we just vegetated watching TV. 1st off, we watched A CHRISTMAS STORY® with Darren McGavin. Then Steve found some Sports Channel with international soccer, so we watched that for an hour. The following program was 2 hours of highlights from the 2000 season of Rugby Football. This rugby stuff was great watching. The BRITISH AIRWAYS® commercial was superb. While watching rugby, Steve rang up his parents down under in Oz. We all took turns talking to Stephen and Marion, Rick, and Grandma Atkins. They are 1 day ahead of us, so it was the day after Christmas for them. However, Australia has a holiday called Boxer's Day which is the day after Christmas. So, they were all still celebralebrating the holidays. After talking with Steve's family, I rang up Dad's older brother Uncle Dick. Uncle Dick sounded a little under the weather (We subsequently learned that he was experiencing the terminal stage of pancreatic cancer and would live only another month.). We all took turns talking to Uncle Dick. I was very happy to speak with him again. Dad had a troubled relationship with Uncle Dick, so we never visited with him much. So I treasured every opportunity to visit with Uncle Dick.
