I returned to the wash near Cave Springs in October 2011 after missing 2010. Apparently the wash received a lot of rain, which cleared it for a few hundred feet past the previous end point of the wash. This scene is near the end of the clearly defined area of the wash. Beyond this point the wash becomes harder to make out. The rock outcropping near the center of the image is about 30 feet tall. I photographed this scene on a large rock from the opposite bank of the wash.

I love the orange and red leaves on the Maples, the contrast of the shape and texture of the rocks against the dead tree trunks and colorful Fall leaves. I like how the dead tree trunks and rocks in the foreground form a "V" shape the leads your eye through the image: from the mid-right edge of the image down to the mid-botton edge and then back into the mid-left part of the image. I also found that this composition worked better as a vertical than as a horizontal.

I used my EBONY SV810 8x10 camera, Nikon NIKKOR-SW 120mm f8 lens, along with VELVIA 100 on the top image and PROVIA 100F on the bottom image. I prefer the colors of the VELVIA 100 film to the PROVIA 100F. However, I prefer the dynamic range of the PROVIA 100F film to the VELVIA 100. So both images have something that appeals to me.
