SUNDAY - Visiting Mount Saint Helens

On Sunday morning, Paul and I drove up to see Mount Saint Helens . The sky was again clear blue, a perfect day. It does not seem that far from Portland, just across the Oregon-Washington state line. However, it took us a couple of hours to get to the top tourist stop at Mount Saint Helens. And the top tourist stop is ist stop is on a completely different mountain top than Mount Saint Helens!

We got to the top tourist stop and watched a movie on Mount Saint Helens erupting. Very impressive. A little known fact, at least to me, was that the top of Mount Saint Helens did not blow off. It was actually more to the side of the mountain that the eruption occurred. The wind near the top of Mount Saint Helens was pretty strong and actually blew Paul and I off balance. Mount Saint Helens is still an impressive sight even today. As you drive up the mountain, you can still see trees blown down all across the mountain sides and patches of mountain sides that are completely barren. Definitely worth seeing on a clear day.

After seeing Mount Saint Helens, we drove back to Paul and Rochelle's home. We picked up Rochelle and ate dinner. Then we went to see LES MISERABLES, a play running in Portland at the time. The play was nice. An interesting aspect of the theater was that some people came dressed very nice and others, like Paul and me, came dressed in blue jeans and a sweat shirt.

A very enjoyable weekend, especially the rockets. And best of all, we had plenty of sunshine and not any rain. And such was my visit for Paul's Birthday for 1999.
