THURSDAY

Saying Goodbye to Aunt Lou

Thursday morning we checked out of our hotel and drove over to Aunt Lou's to say goodbye. Aunt Lou was up for talking and visiting, which we enjoyed. She started in on MediCare, MedicAid, Doctors, Nursing Homes, and Hospitals (inadequate minimum staffing). She felt that the medical care at the USL University Medical Center and Charity Hospitals was as good as, or sometimes better, than at the regular hospitals. We then said our goodbyes to Aunt Lou and hit the road. We got out of town just before the rain started, so our timing was impeccable.

Driving through Houston

We drove into Houston and checked into our hotel near the airport. We stayed at a different hotel this year, which turned out very nice. Marc enjoyed the gym, and the room seemed a little less cramped than the other hotel. After unpacking, we drove to PAPPADEAUX'S restaurant for an early dinner. I got my usual ½ crawfish étouffée, ½ fried crawfish tails, and a salad. They tasted delicious. Marc also enjoyed the food. And curiously, our server was from Lafayette. Small world, eh?

Then we drove on to Uncle Jimmy's house to visit him and Susie. We listened to the radio along the way. I was surprised to discover upon scanning the radio stations that Houston only had 1 FM Rock station; everything else was either Country Music or Talk Radio. Quite a change from when I lived in Houston 11 years ago...

Visiting with Uncle Jimmy and Susie

We arrived at Uncle Jimmy's house a little before Susie, so we got to visit with Uncle Jimmy for a while. He seemed a little more energetic than at the Wedding the last weekend, so we felt happy about that. His area is getting plenty of rain, as is Houston and south Louisiana. Uncle Jimmy told us about all of the places that he flew to when he was an airline pilot. He visited quite a lot of cities all over the world, including:

.

Then Uncle Jimmy pulled out his Wedding Album and showed us photos of Mom when she was 14 and (later) 16 years old. Then Uncle Jimmy recalled moving from Lafayette to Houma (I thought that they had lived in New Orleans) in the mid-50s, where Susie was born. Jimbo and Bill were both born in Lafayette. Uncle Jimmy had a tough time finding a house in Houma; the real estate agents could not find anything. Then a hotel clerk offered to make a phone call for Uncle Jimmy and he was lined up with a house shortly thereafter.

Around that time Susie arrived. She looked good. The house remodel was supposed to be finished by July 03rd, so she was looking forward to moving back into her own home. Susie and Phil are back in Conroe to stay. Andy and Stephanie are both working. Andy is back in school as well. I cannot recall where they are living right now. Jimbo and Kristen are still living in Midland, with a camp west of Austin along a river.

Around 09:00PM we wrapped up our conversation and said goodbye to Uncle Jimmy and Susie. We drove back to our hotel, and I slept very soundly that night. The next morning we checked out of our hotel and drove to the airport and flew home uneventfully. Marc drove us back to Sedona, and such was our Pitre Family visit for June 2014.
