These Sycamores are against the hill facing north and Highway 89A. I felt that the yellow bush in the right foreground created an interesting contrast with the orange leaves of the Sycamores. In fact the trees and bush form an analogous color scheme of orange-yellow-green. The cool gray of the rocks and the blue-violet shadows form a complementary contrast with the trees and bush and help intensify their colors. Finally, the sky forms a simple negative shape to contrast the trees and bush and rocks. I took the above photo with my PhaseOne 645AF Medium Format camera, MAMIYA 35mm f3.5 AF lens, and Fuji VELVIA 50 color slide film.
I took the above photo 2 days later, November 05th, with my EBONY SV810 8x10 camera, Rodenstock SIRONAR-S 240mm f5.6 lens, and Fuji VELVIA 50 color slide film (All of the photography shops were out of VELVIA 100 in 8x10, so I ended up shooting a lot of VELVIA 50. This year I stocked up on VELVIA 100 to prevent this mistake). I took this photo later in the day than the top photo above. As you can see, the shadows are deeper, and the light/dark contrast is stronger. This photo is my favorite of the 3: really strong, intense contrast and colors.
I took the photo below the next day. Different lighting (slightly more overcast) and different aspect ratio (5x7 versus 6x4.5/8x10). The yellow bush stands out more, creating a better contrast with the Sycamores. However, the lack of shadows on the rocks lessens the contrast. I took the photo below with my Ebony SV57 5x7 camera, Schneider SUPER-SYMMAR XL 150mm f5.6 lens, and Fuji VELVIA 100 color slide film.
