I hiked up Chimney Rock the morning of February 22, 2013, after hiking up Teacup and Sugarloaf to photograph the snow-capped rock formations from those points. The sky was clear and crisp, with a few soft clouds near the horizon. I exposed 2 sheets of color slide film (Fuji VELVIA 100), of which I prefer this photograph. The bright crisp morning sunlight on Thunder Mountain and Coffepot creates a nice contrast with the shadowy areas like "the Fin". The bluish snow, combined with the soft blue sky with soft whitish clouds creates a feeling of peace and tranquility. The image almost feels silent, like during a meditation.
I took this photo with my Toyo METAL FIELD CAMERA with the 4x5 back and Rodenstock APO-SIRONAR-S 180mm f5.6 Lens. I set the aperture to f22 and the shutter speed to 1/15 second.
